Becker AR6201 8.33Khz VHF Transceiver

Becker Avionics have been around for years, highly regarded in the aviation industry and loved by glider pilots the world over. The Becker radio is one of the most successful panel mount radios around and the latest 833 version, the 6201 is no exception. With is blindingly simple operation, familiar operation with previous models yet advanced features, this has to be one of the best radio’s on the market.

The Becker 6201 833 is a direct replacement for the very popular 4201 25MHz radio connecting directly to the original 4201 wiring loom and connector. An adapter is available for pilots wanting to upgrade from the earlier 3201 wiring loom.

Please contact us here for stock availability.

Available in two power ratings, 6w and 10w and two formats, single block or split block (for space constrained panels). The radio can also be configured for two seat operation with the addition of a rear seat repeater head unit.

What will I need?

Single seat glider -retrofit

If you have an existing panel mount radio you will need to consider the physical size of the new Radio (will it fit in the same space) and how you are going to connect it to the existing microphone, speaker, antenna, PTT switch and existing wiring harness.

In terms of physical size, if the new Radio single block version will not fit, then the remote unit and head unit might be a good option but most old 25Mhz radios are typically bigger so you should be able to fit the single block radio in.

Connecting to existing wiring loom. If you are replacing a Becker 4201 then the wiring harness is identical and will save you lots of time. If you are replacing a Becker 3201 then there is a simple adapter cable that can be used to save time as well.

If you are replacing another type of radio then you have two choices. Either replace the wiring loom with a single seat wiring loom or identify the wires for the speaker, PTT and microphone along with power and ground. You can then remake the connector using a solder or crimp connector kit. Please note, you also need to identify your microphone type (Electret or Dynamic) and make the appropriate connections or purchase a matched microphone. You should also check the speaker resistance and power to make sure this will be ok. Navboys are able to replace and fit radios on your behalf, please call us for a quote.

Single seat - new glider

Depending on the position you would like your radio in your new panel it may be possible to fit the single block radio or if in a tight space then you may need to use the remote block and remote head unit. Your glider manufacturer will be able to advise you on panel layout or Navboys would be happy to do this on your behalf.

Connecting your new radio again depends on the glider manufacturer, some like to use custom wiring harness’s for Becker radio’s that they keep in stock and others like to use the standard single seat wiring harness. Don’t forget you also need to order a match microphone and speaker! Navboys work with many of the manufacturers and can advise, just give us a call.

Two seat glider – retrofit

Replacing an existing radio in a two seat glider is a little more complicated because we need to consider the existing wiring harness between front and back repeater units. If the original installation was a Becker 4201 or 3201 with repeater then physically the new single block and repeater will fit and in terms of wiring, the existing wiring loom can be used (3201 requires a simple adapter)

If you are replacing another manufacturer’s radio with a Becker 6201 and repeater then whilst it may be possible to re-use some of the existing wiring, a better solution long term will be to replace the wiring harness with a 2 seat harness from Becker. It will be quite a big job to do involving removal of seat pans and tracing wiring routs from front to back but it is not impossible.

Two seat glider – new glider

Depending on the position you would like your radio in your new panels it may be possible to fit the single block radio or if in a tight space then you may need to use the remote block and remote head unit both front and back. Your glider manufacturer will be able to advise you on the panel layouts or Navboys would be happy to do this on your behalf.

Connecting your new radio again depends on the glider manufacturer, some like to use custom wiring harness’s for Becker radio’s that they keep in stock and others like to use the standard two seat wiring harness. Don’t forget you also need to order matched microphone’s and speakers! This is particularly important if you plan to use headsets as well. Matching the microphones for both gliding and motor gliding will be really important. Navboys work with many of the manufacturers and can advise, just give us a call.
